Interviewing the Interviewer
I like to take pride in being one of those people who watches a lot of press interviews and behind the scenes videos for film and tv. I love quoting from those press interviews- Chris Hemsworth’s “since uh when?☝🏻”, Anthony Mackie’s “Pew Pew Wee” or “Pow Pow Pow”, Paul Rudd calling “Mjölnir” “Jonathan”, or absolutely agreeing with Benedict Cumberbatch’s pronunciation of Penguins, Penwings, Pennings or Pengwings, any of those options. All of this media lives in my head rent-free which is why I forget the name of the pet my friend has or their birthday, or their name, or if I even know them (Uber Eats ad feels real much?!). I’m kidding, or am I?
My friends who know me well, and whose names escape me, know how big of a cinephile I am. I am always sending them press interviews, red carpet memes, behind the scenes footage, SNL videos, casting announcements and all things entertainment. They know I live and breathe cinema.
So when I recently got the incredible opportunity to interview my favourite entertainment journalist of all time, I was thrilled! I’ve followed his work for almost a decade now. He is truly an inspiration for creativity, quality of questions, and setting a comfortable environment. Every interview I have seen of his has always been on topic, and felt like a conversation between friends, even if it’s their first time meeting. That’s GOALS! He said this in our interview- that his superpower is to talk to everyone the same way and making people feel at ease. It’s a skill I hope to learn as I sure was very nervous before this interview. Sweaty palms, thinking it was a bad idea to have coffee, you get the gist.
I got a chance to interview the interviewer, Josh Horowitz, a television and podcast host, writer, author, producer, and actor. He is a host for MTV, Comedy Central, Paramount+, and since 2014, the celebrity interview podcast Happy Sad Confused. He serves as a frequent moderator in New York and Los Angeles, and as a perennial presence on red carpets from the Oscars to San Diego Comic-Con.
We talked about his career, importance of a brand, skills needed to get into this industry, his favourite interviews, and so much more. It was one of the most delightful one-hour. I was filled with so much joy and energy, that it made me realise the importance of having that one meaningful conversation. We need that great conversation for a reality check, to feel motivated, inspired, alive!
